The Roofing Process

The steps required to properly replace a roof will vary slightly depending on the condition and type of roof being replaced, but most shingle roof replacements are made up of the following six basic steps.

1. TEAR OFF
All shingles and underlayment are removed to expose plywood decking.
2. PLYWOOD
Any warped or rotting plywood is replaced with new plywood.
3. LEAK BARRIER
Leak barrier material (Ice & Water Shield) is applied to valleys and leak prone areas.
4. UNDERLAYMENT
Sheets of felt or synthetic underlayment are rolled down and nailed to the decking.
5. SHINGLES
Shingles are laid down and nailed in a specific pattern to ensure proper coverage.
6. CLEAN UP
All debris and trash are removed from the roof and exterior areas surrounding the house.
